Leads a performance-driven system of school supervision with clear accountability for measurable improvements in student achievement, particularly in schools requiring comprehensive or targeted support. Drives rapid and sustained improvement in academic outcomes, school culture, and operational effectiveness.
Provides leadership and direction for the effective and efficient operation and academic management of schools in accordance with School Board policy and strategic initiatives; ensures appropriate and equitable educational opportunities for all students; directly supervises the region assistant superintendents (RAS), Title I, the department of school improvement and supports, Thomas Jefferson High School for Science & Technology (TJHSST), and student activities and athletics program; regularly interacts with school administrators, departmental leadership, and other central office staff; serves as a liaison between the Division Superintendent's office and various Fairfax County Public Schools constituencies, as appropriate.
Qualifications
Required
- Master's degree.
- Eight (8) years of experience in leadership and management within education.
- Advanced degree(s) beyond the minimum degree requirement in a relevant field may be considered for some experience.
- Postgraduate educational license with endorsement(s) designated as appropriate to assignment.
- Endorsement in administration and supervision Prek-12.
- Holds, or is eligible to hold, a Virginia Division Superintendent license or certification.
- Knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures relating to curriculum and instruction for general, special education, and adult populations and all related student services.
- Knowledge of school improvement and organizational change strategies and initiatives.
- Knowledge of diversity, cultural proficiency, and equity issues.
- Knowledge of applicable local, state, and federal laws related to schools.
- Ability to establish and realize goals, objectives, and action plans.
- Ability to lead, manage, challenge, and motivate a team.
- Ability to identify and prioritize mission critical issues with alignment of people, time, and resources.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the multiplicity of constituencies served by the Division, the School Board, and federal, state, and county officials.
Preferred - Doctoral degree.
- Successful experience as a principal, central office administrative leadership experience, and/or large-scale educational project management.
- Experience leading school or regional turnaround initiatives, including measurable improvements in student achievement, school culture, and operational performance.
- Experience implementing strategies to improve early literacy outcomes, including increasing third-grade reading proficiency.
- Experience implementing strategies to improve middle school mathematics readiness, including increasing Algebra I completion by or before Grade 8.
- Experience using data to drive instructional improvement and monitor student growth across multiple years.
- Experience leading initiatives to improve student engagement and attendance, and reduce chronic absenteeism.
- Experience supporting educator retention and workforce stability in high-needs schools.
Requirements
Major Duties/Essential Functions
- Provides educational and administrative leadership, direction, and counsel for region assistant superintendents, region teams, and student activities and athletics program.
- Supports the regions in establishing instructional leadership expectations and setting measurable goals for school leadership teams through the analysis of relevant data; development, implementation, and monitoring of school improvement and other action plans; and creation of principal professional learning and coaching plans to close achievement gaps.
- Engages in short- and long-term planning with Division Superintendent and members of the Leadership Team and facilitates actions to effectively implement the Division's Strategic Plan and other Division priorities.
- Collaborates with the senior leadership team to ensure standards-aligned curriculum, assessments, and instructional best practices are implemented with fidelity across all schools.
- Provides guidance to regions and school leaders on the management of fiscal and human resources to support the Division's Strategic Plan.
- Supports the Office of Student Athletics and Activities in establishing student activities that comply with federal, state, and local requirements, ensuring equitable access to programs across schools and regions.
- Provides leadership and oversight for the Division's Title I programs, ensuring compliance with federal requirements and the strategic use of resources to support schools serving high concentrations of economically-disadvantaged students and accelerate student achievement.
- Provides leadership and oversight for the Department of School Improvement and Supports, ensuring region-based teams deliver data-informed instructional support, targeted resources, and coaching to schools to build capacity, close achievement gaps, and meet state and federal accreditation requirements.
- Establishes a climate conducive to learning, planning, and coordinating programs, resulting in student success in school and life.
- Seeks and implements innovative and adaptive solutions to educational and organizational challenges.
- Provides leadership and guidance in developing, implementing, and assessing Division initiatives.
- Continually informs the Division Superintendent and the School Board when appropriate about all current issues and proposed resolutions.
- Works in collaboration with the Leadership Team to facilitate clear and effective communication with school leadership.
- Ensures cohesive, effective efforts to improve student achievement, close achievement gaps, and address accreditation issues.
- Keeps current with and provides direction in the latest educational trends and research.
- Provides effective support to monitoring of the regions, schools, and assigned departments.
- Directs all functions and services consistent with school division mission, goals, and budget and ensures compliance with applicable federal and state regulations and laws.
- Performs related duties as required or assigned.
Work Environment/Physical Requirements
This job operates in a professional office environment and has a noise level of mostly low to moderate. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.
