About the Role
Internet2 seeks a collaborative and strategic leader to drive operational excellence in the organization's research-supporting infrastructure, ensure cross-team alignment, and secure funding to advance Internet2 and initiatives for data-intensive research, education, and workforce development across the national cyberinfrastructure ecosystem. This role shapes internal operational structures and strengthens alliances with academia, industry, and government partners to advance collaboratively-delivered platforms that benefit the national Research and Education (R&E) community, at scale.
The Director will develop and implement operational frameworks that design and execute infrastructure to support national cyberinfrastructure initiatives, incorporating community needs and translating those needs into actionable service and infrastructure development opportunities. They will support the development and sustainment of new offerings by building business cases, coordinating pilots, and guiding long-term service evolution.
The successful candidate will have experience leading large and complex cyberinfrastructure efforts, securing grant funding, and building strong partnerships across sectors. They will work across Internet2 teams and the broader community to identify funding opportunities, develop proposals and agreements, and implement programs that address emerging needs in advanced networking, cloud services, data management, research computing, and research support.
Key ResponsibilitiesStrategic Planning & Program Development
- Monitor trends in research computing, cloud services, cybersecurity, data-intensive science, and CI workforce needs to anticipate opportunities for new Internet2 and partner offerings.
- Lead the translation of unmet community needs into actionable service concepts, initiatives, partnership opportunities, including the articulation of value propositions, risk assessments, sustainability modeling, and promotional strategies.
- Develop and present service roadmaps, strategic briefs, and member-engagement plans to internal leadership, advisory groups, and community stakeholders.
Cross-Disciplinary Infrastructure Leadership
- Lead cross-disciplinary and cross-organizational infrastructure development across technical, operational, and community teams to bring new services from concept to launch and support their long-term evolution.
- Coordinate internal and external collaborators to deliver high-impact results.
- Engage across teams to understand and refine service requirements and to deliver metrics that evaluate pilot implementations and ensure that operational infrastructure delivers measurable community value.
- Build, develop and lead a support staff to accomplish the goals mentioned above.
Partnership & Community Engagement
- Build, evolve, and sustain partnerships across academia, industry, government agencies, regional networks, and research organizations that inform service and operational models
- Leverage the unique talents, capabilities, and expertise across the Internet2 community to foster shared innovation.
- Represent Internet2 at conferences, working groups, and strategic meetings.
Funding & Proposal Development
- Monitor and review opportunities from federal agencies (e.g., NSF, NIH, DOE), foundations, and private-sector programs that advance organizational priorities and benefit the R&E community.
- Lead or support the full life cycle of proposal development, including concept definition, writing, budgeting, compliance, and partner coordination.
- Lead sustainment planning for all awards and programs under your purview, in partnership with Internet2 leadership teams.

QualificationsRequired
- Bachelor's degree (Or equivalent combination of education and experience)
- 5+ years' experience in cyberinfrastructure strategy, research support, business development, grant development, and/or related roles.
- 5+ years direct leadership of high-impact teams
- Proven track record leading complex, large-scale collaborative projects in cyberinfrastructure, networking, or research computing.
- Demonstrated success in securing grant funding and building strategic partnerships across organizations and sectors.
- Strong communication, writing, facilitation, and relationship-management skills.
- Ability to coordinate diverse stakeholders and drive shared outcomes.
Preferred
- Experience in the R&E networking community, higher education, federal agencies, national labs, or non-profit technology organizations.
- Familiarity with advanced networking, high-performance computing, cloud services, data management, research software, or large-scale scientific collaborations.
- Experience structuring MOUs, consortium agreements, or multi-institutional initiatives.
- Ability to work independently while navigating complex stakeholder environments.
Salary Range / Pay Grade
Position Typically Pays: $160,800-$201,000
Starting pay is typically from the minimum up to the mid-point of the salary range and varies based on experience. Max Point compensation is posted for pay transparency.
$160,800 (Entry Point)-$201,000 (Mid-Point) - $241,200 (Max Point) / Pay Grade: IT-7
