- Information Resources Fellow
Description
This position in our Transit Fellow Program is an opportunity for students currently studying Archives, Library and Information Science, Records Management or related fields with an interest in public transit to gain valuable professional experience. This fellowship combines a unique blend of working with local government, public transit, information management, archiving and website development.
The position will focus on increasing access to our varied resources on current local transit projects and conveying regional transit goals on our website. The Information Resources Fellow will support projects that preserve NVTC history, knowledge and cultural assets and continue to tell the story of transit in the region. Additionally, they will contribute to the development of engaging, searchable, and employee-facing resources that enhance organizational access and learning. This opportunity provides students with experience working on a small team to assist information management and website design and organization in a local public transit agency using skills they have learned in school.
The Fellow will work closely with the IT & Web Resources Manager and Data Visualization Manager for professional support and guidance.
We are seeking applicants available to begin their fellowship for the summer of 2026 (May or June to August 2026).
Position Description
The responsibilities below are intended to describe the general nature and complexity of the work, they are not exhaustive.
Information Organization and Resource Management
- Inventory and organize digital and physical materials, possibly assist with managing backlog of stored records
- Research and implement use of asset management tool to organize communications media (photos, video, audio recordings) and metadate creation for searchability
- Assist in writing protocols and training materials for asset management
- Organize, catalog, and check quality/functionality of digital files for efficient retrieval and use in SharePoint sites
- Create Finding Aids for key record groups
- Digitize and increase online access to critical and historic NVTC records
- Website Development, Design and Management
- Design and build webpages for upcoming reports, transit topics or NVTC events
- Assist with the website maintenance and host migration
- Integrate web-based resources for various assets such as ArcGIS maps, videos, reports and photographs
- Review and improve site analytics, tag management, and user interface
Duration
Fellowships run from 3 to 6 months (with options for performance-based extensions). The weekly work schedule is 20 hours (minimum) to 40 hours per week. This is a hybrid position- two days a week onsite and telework.
Salary
NVTC offers $23 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience, and provides transit benefits.
NVTC’s office is in the Court House area of Arlington, Virginia, accessible by several local transit stops. Work hours are generally 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. This is a hybrid position, with fellows expected to work at least two days a week onsite (preferably Tuesday/Thursday).
Additional work hours may include occasional evening meetings.
Additional Information

Requirements
- Currently enrolled at an accredited university or college in the fields of Archives, Library and Information Science, Records Management or related fields (graduate or undergraduate degree program)
- Coursework and/or experience in cataloging/metadata and digital libraries; familiarity and/or experience with MARC, Dublin Core, RDA, and subject headings/authorities
- Interest in public service, local government, libraries, or archives
- Above average IT skills and understanding of website design and management (WordPress/CMS, HTML, CSS)
- Previous experience with digital asset management systems highly desirable
- Computer proficiency in Microsoft Suite/Google Suite, familiarity with SharePoint useful
- Willingness to learn through hands-on tasks and projects
- Both a self-starter and a team player
- Creative problem solving and curiosity
- Detail oriented, organized, and thorough
