Laboratory Research Assistant

This role will support clinical and translational research in cardiology and dementia, with the opportunity to learn additional skills as projects progress.
- Process and handle biological samples for storage and analysis, including aliquoting and centrifuging according to biobanking SOPs.
- Maintain accurate sample logs, research records, and lab documentation.
- Assist with data collection, entry, and basic data analysis to support ongoing projects.
- Support coordination of research activities across study sites (Presbyterian, Mercy, and others as assigned).
Collaborate with research investigators and staff to support experimental protocols and study needs.

Job Summary
Performs laboratory testing and some analysis on multiple types of specimen samples. Operates and properly sterilizes equipment and maintains inventory and assists with ordering.
Essential Functions
- Proficiency in basic laboratory and biobanking techniques, including aliquoting, centrifugation, labeling, and proper sample handling.
- Experience with specimen processing, storage, and inventory management within a biorepository environment.
- Familiarity with electronic data capture, REDCap, and secure database handling.
- Basic data analysis skills (SAS or similar statistical software preferred).
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow standardized protocols precisely.
Physical Effort
Must be able to move between Pitt and UPMC labs/offices. Position will primarily be located onsite at the BST building, but will also be needed in UPMC Presbyterian and the UPMC Mercy sites, with the flexibility to support other UPMC sites as needed. May stand, bend, sit, walk for longer periods of time.
