The Department of Biomedical Sciences and Pathobiology in the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech seeks a strategic leader, established scientist, and accomplished educator to serve as its Department Head.  The Department Head will serve on the College Executive Board and be responsible for all aspects of the department’s academic mission in research, instruction, outreach, and clinical diagnostics.  This involves supervision of faculty and staff and administrative responsibilities for planning, fiscal management and communication.  The Department embraces a One Health approach as it implements a vision to expand life sciences at Virginia Tech through discovery, learning, and service.  The Department is guided by a vision to achieve national distinction in biomedical research that involves One Health medicine, specifically in infectious disease, inflammatory and immunological diseases, neuroscience and regenerative medicine; diagnostic medicine and professional services; and professional and graduate student instruction.

In addition to departmental leadership responsibilities, the Head is expected to contribute personally to the teaching and/or service missions of the Department and maintain scholarly contributions that are nationally recognized.  The Department Head is a full-time, twelve-month administrative leadership position that reports directly to the Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine.

Diversity, equity, and inclusion are core values at Virginia Tech and the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine. Our excellence can only be fully realized by faculty, students, and staff who share our commitment to these values. Successful candidates for department head will demonstrate evidence of a commitment to broadening participation and advancing inclusion and belonging.

Responsibilities: The successful candidate will be expected to provide creative leadership for faculty development in areas of teaching, research, and diagnostic services.  Additionally, the successful candidate will be expected to effectively represent and promote the Department and its faculty, as well as participate in teaching, research, and/or diagnostic services.  Other important duties include leadership of staff employees and resource management.  The anticipated appointment will be for five years with successful performance, and subject to renewal at five-year intervals.

Applications must include a letter of intent outlining special interest in the position, related qualifications, professional experiences, and leadership/administrative philosophies; a curriculum vitae; a statement summarizing experience and professional contributions in the area of diversity, equity and inclusion; and the names and addresses of three professional references.
