Description

Matterworks is seeking an experienced, creative, and highly-motivated individual to lead the development of experimental workflows to support our computational platform. The role will involve translating our large-scale data generation needs into high-throughput workflows, by harnessing internal expertise and engaging external partners. You will collaborate with Product Development to systematize novel analytical processes into sets of protocols, reagents, and consumables for deployment on high-resolution mass spectrometry equipment.

You will be expected to provide strategic leadership, direct laboratory experimental work, manage a small team of scientists, and liaise with and influence technical experts across chemistry, biology, and data science. You will have the opportunity to make significant individual scientific contributions, while collaborating with the business and intellectual property functions of the company. Deep working knowledge of analytical biochemistry is essential. Familiarity with current metabolomics solutions, use cases, and/or basic tools in computational biology is desirable.

Opportunities for growth and professional development include participating in refining the company’s scientific vision and strategy; exposure to business plans and strategy, investor relations, and diligence processes; and building the skills essential to leading an R&D organization.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan, implement, test, and validate high-throughput experimental workflows that integrate laboratory automation and analytical instrumentation with computational methods in machine learning and data visualization
  • Identify relevant analytical technologies for incorporation into the Matterworks platform by engaging external partners, qualifying readiness, and leading technical assessment
  • Keep up-to-date and report on advances in analytical chemistry relevant to the team’s efforts, by reading academic and corporate literature, and attending conferences and trade shows
  • Manage and drive experimental work internally and also coordinate with external resources (e.g. CROs)

Requirements

  • PhD or equivalent experience in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, Physics or related field required
  • 5+ years of industry experience in leadership roles, having built and managed multi-disciplinary teams
  • 5+ years of experience required in the development of liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) analytical workflows, reagents, and consumables
  • Experience establishing and managing technology development roadmaps, and coordinating cross-functional teams and efforts
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to engage with the Matterworks team as well as external partners in academia and industry
  • Thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic startup environment

Nice to Have

  • Familiarity with advanced machine learning and deep learning
  • Experience in product development of scientific tools, and involvement in the transition of technologies into products
  • Familiarity with software tools for experimental design and/or data visualization
