Company History
In 1856, two business leaders, Pascal P. Pratt and Bronson C. Rumsey, shared a train ride returning to Buffalo from New York City. During the long ride, they began discussing the need for additional banks in the city. The existing commercial banks were often unwilling to make longer-term loans necessary to finance durable equipment used in manufacturing. By the time the train pulled into Buffalo, plans for Manufacturers and Traders Bank were germinating. M&T Bank officially opened for business on August 29, 1856.
