Position Description:
The University of Louisville School of Nursing invites applications for an open-rank Assistant Professor Term (Open Rank), with primary expertise in mother-baby (perinatal/neonatal) nursing and community/public health nursing. This 10-month term faculty position will contribute to undergraduate nursing education across the traditional Bachelor of Science in Nursing and the Accelerated Second-Degree BSN programs, beginning August 1, 2026.
The ideal candidate brings a rich clinical foundation in perinatal care, encompassing labor and delivery, postpartum, newborn, and lactation support, combined with demonstrated competency in community and population health nursing practice. The faculty member will be positioned to help students develop person-centered, equity-informed, and evidence-based competencies across the perinatal-through-community continuum.
Minimum Qualifications
- Master of Science in Nursing
- Minimum of two (2) years of clinical nursing experience in mother-baby, perinatal, maternal-newborn, or related specialty (e.g., labor and delivery, postpartum, NICU, well-baby nursery).
- Demonstrable clinical experience in community health, public health, or population-based nursing practice.
- Effective teaching experience in undergraduate nursing education, or recent formal education in pedagogy, instructional design, or adult learning principles.
- Excellent presentation, writing, communication, and team collaboration skills.
- Eligible to obtain an unencumbered RN license to practice nursing in Kentucky.
Preferred Qualifications
- Doctoral degree in nursing, or related discipline. Candidates without a doctoral degree must provide a written plan and commitment to enroll in a doctoral program within two years of hire as a condition of eligibility for promotion.
- National professional certification in a relevant specialty area, such as: Registered Nurse Certified (RNC-OB, RNC-MNN), International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), Certified Public Health Nurse (CPHN), or equivalent.
- Three or more years of clinical practice in mother-baby, perinatal, or women's health nursing, with demonstrated breadth across labor and delivery, postpartum, and newborn care settings.
- Experience in course development, delivery, and evaluation.
- Evidence of competency in teaching across multiple modalities, including face-to-face, online, and hybrid formats.
- Demonstrated leadership and teaching scholarship.
- Robust knowledge of salient research, effective pedagogical practices, adult learning theories, instructional design, higher education workforce trends, assessment techniques, scholarly research practices, teaching practices, and teaching technologies.
- Experience in providing instruction and consulting with faculty on effective student-centered teaching and learning, teaching with technology, universal design for learning, and teaching in all modalities.
- Experience developing curricular programming and educational programs with broad campus collaboration.
- Experience with interprofessional education (IPE) initiatives relevant to perinatal or community health settings.
Role Expectations
Teaching faculty are expected to attend orientation/trainings, submit course syllabus, order textbooks or other required learning materials, provide developmentally appropriate and meaningful feedback, present engaging and diverse learning experiences, respond to students in a timely manner, communicate regularly with designated course chair, maintain collegial and respectful relations with members of the UofL community and external stakeholders, submit course data and final grades within university deadlines, and comply with other requests as an instructor.
In addition to the responsibilities included above, individuals hired into a clinical teaching role within the BSN programs are expected to design and implement clinical experiences to meet established clinical and/or course objectives under the direction of the clinical coordinator. The clinical instructor is responsible for providing direct or indirect supervision of the student, as specified in the course expectations, provide ongoing student performance feedback and evaluate student progress toward meeting established clinical/course objectives and outcomes, and consult with the clinical coordinator if students deviate from the established expectations.
