The Training Program:
General Responsibilities:
Are you ready to stop reading about broadcast technology and actually live it? Do you see a complex technical glitch and think, "Challenge accepted"? At WABI-TV, our Engineering Intern doesn't sit on the bench; you're in the game from day one. As part of Gray Media's high-octane, 10-week paid internship program, you'll work shoulder-to-shoulder with our experienced engineering team, keeping Maine's leading news station on the air.
What You'll Do:
- Own the role: Step into a real broadcast engineering position and take on hands-on tasks that directly support live newscasts, studio productions, and post-production operations that reach thousands of Mainers every single day
• Get your hands dirty (literally): Assist with the installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of broadcast RF, AV, and IT systems and software from studio audio/video systems and routing to networking infrastructure and transmission equipment
• Support live operations: Help ensure all equipment is operating correctly before and during live event broadcasts - learning to identify, correct, and document technical problems with the appropriate sense of urgency
• Drive the technology forward: Support IT-based workflows, digital systems, and streaming platforms across baseband, RF, and IP-based systems.
• Keep us compliant: Learn FCC operational standards and broadcast compliance practices.
• Keep us on the air: Assist with preventative maintenance, equipment inspections, and documentation of configuration changes that keep our operation running at peak performance
• Build your future: Position yourself at the front of the line for full-time engineering opportunities within Gray Media's network of 113 stations across the U.S.
What You Bring:
- Digital savvy: You understand that media happens everywhere, from the big screen to the palm of someone's hand.
- Strong work ethic: You bring urgency, organization, and a "can-do" attitude to every shift.
- Communication skills: You can tell a story, pitch an idea, or explain a forecast with clarity and confidence.
- Reliability: You're ready to commit to the full 10-week program and the 25-hour weekly schedule.
- Passion for local: You care about the community and want to see how local media makes a real difference.
Why You'll Love It Here:
- Real-world experience: You'll graduate with more than just a line on your resume; you'll have the experience of having done the job.
- Unprecedented access: With 113 stations across the U.S., you're part of a massive, innovative network that's leading the future of media.
- Career fast-track: We love hiring our own. This program is designed to be the ultimate audition for your first full-time role with Gray.
- Paid training: Earn while you learn. This is a paid internship.
- A culture of innovation: We're evolving on purpose, and you'll be right there on the front lines of that evolution.
Qualifications/Requirements:
• Current enrollment: You're a college Junior or Senior pursuing a degree in Broadcast Technology, Electronics, Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field.
• A "doer" mindset: You aren't afraid to roll up your sleeves, pick up a tool, and tackle a technical challenge head-on. You're here to work, not just watch
• Tech curiosity: You have a foundational understanding of professional audio/video equipment, computer networking, and operating systems, and a hunger to learn more
• Strong work ethic: You bring urgency, organization, a positive attitude, and a "can-do" spirit to every shift, and you work well with others across departments and disciplines
• Reliability: You're ready to commit to the full 10-week program, the 25-hour weekly schedule, and the occasional flexible hour that a live, 24/7 broadcast environment demands
• Physical readiness: Ability to perform basic physical tasks, including bending and lifting to 50 lbs; occasional work on ladders or in confined spaces may be required
• Passion for local media: You care about the community and want to see firsthand how local television technology makes a real difference every single day
• A valid driver's license with a clean driving record is required.
