This role serves as a subject matter expert (SME) in analytical chemistry, providing technical leadership in complex molecular characterization, unknown identification, structural elucidation, and analytical problem solving.
The role requires deep hands-on expertise in advanced analytical techniques and the ability to translate complex analytical data into actionable business insights. The Senior Manager works independently, leads investigations, and mentors a small team of professionals while contributing to the development of new analytical and digital capabilities across global R&D.
Key Responsibilities
Serve as an analytical science SME, supporting ingredient and beverage research and innovation across global R&D.
Design, develop, optimize, and validate analytical methods for routine, non-routine, and investigative studies.
Lead and execute unknown identification, impurity, and degradant investigations using MS-centric approaches.
Apply advanced analytical techniques to support qualitative, quantitative, non-targeted analysis, and structural elucidation.
Translate complex analytical data into clear, actionable technical and business insights.
Engage with internal clients to define analytical needs and deliver fit-for-purpose solutions.
Conduct and/or lead routine, non-routine, and investigative testing to support R&D and commercialization.
Build and expand analytical chemistry capabilities, including automation, data analytics, and digital workflows.
Manage and ensure optimal performance of analytical instrumentation.
Compile, interpret, document, and report analytical results in technical reports and formal documentation.
Organize and lead analytical projects, including setting priorities, managing workflows, and meeting timelines.
Search, evaluate, and apply scientific literature to support innovation and problem solving.
Supervise and mentor contract workers and junior staff as needed.
Required Skills & Expertise
Extensive hands-on experience with advanced analytical instrumentation, including:
LC–MS, LC–MS/MS, GC–MS, and high-resolution MS platforms (e.g., qTOF, Orbitrap)
Qualitative, quantitative, and non-targeted analyses
Unknown identification and structural elucidation of small molecules, impurities, degradants, and contaminants
Strong expertise in method development, optimization, and validation across food, beverage, and ingredient matrices.
Proven capability in impurity profiling, degradant studies, and investigative analytical problem solving.
Ability to integrate and interpret analytical data to support formulation, stability, regulatory, and scale-up decisions.
Strong technical writing and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate complex data to diverse audiences.
Demonstrated ability to work independently while leading and mentoring others.
Education & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Analytical Chemistry or a closely related field required; MS or Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry strongly preferred.
Minimum of:
7+ years of relevant industry experience with a Ph.D., or
10+ years of relevant industry experience with a BS or MS.
Candidates must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents (green card holders).
Preferred Competencies
Foundational understanding of NMR spectroscopy for structural confirmation.
Working knowledge of purification and isolation techniques, such as preparative HPLC, solid-phase extraction (SPE), and fractionation.
Familiarity with protein, peptide, or other biomolecule analysis using mass spectrometry or complementary techniques.
Experience building or implementing automation, data analytics, or digital laboratory workflows.
Strong leadership, project management, and mentoring skills within a matrixed R&D environment.
Pay Range $131,000 - $153,000 Base pay offered may vary depending on geography, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. A full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the position, is offered.
