Description
Department of Breast Surgical Oncology
Job Title: Tenure/Tenure Track - Assistant Professor, Clinical Faculty Appointment
The Department of Breast Surgical Oncology at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is seeking/recruiting for a full-time faculty member of Assistant Professor to develop a translational research and clinical program in causal inference research to develop methods for estimating the effects of treatment strategies and policies using observational data, particularly those that are sustained over time, as well as the application of those methods to answer topical questions in surgical oncology.
This position offers the opportunity for professional growth and development by joining an active group of clinicians, physician scientists, basic and translational investigators.
Responsibilities will include research, clinical care and teaching. The successful candidate will be expected to develop and lead clinical and/or translational research programs in the area of sustained treatment strategies in surgical oncology and to develop novel methods for estimating effects of interventions in ways that are most useful and transparent to decision makers. This will include developing a longitudinal database which contains data on initiation and adherence to endocrine therapies following surgical treatment of early-stage estrogen receptor positive breast cancer using the electronic health record. This data will be used to estimate the effectiveness of sustained treatment strategies that have not been evaluated in randomized trials including the effectiveness of full adherence to endocrine therapies, comparison of different endocrine therapy agents under equivalent adherence mechanisms, and the effectiveness of strategies which allow for breaks from endocrine therapy when, for example, mild adverse effects occur. Will also include studying the effects of dynamic intra-operative strategies that identify, from a candidate set of interventions, the optimal timing and response to adverse intra-operative surgical and anesthesia events. These estimates would be used to improve real-time decision making in the operating room, and extend the limited existing knowledge on management of intra-operative adverse events.
Applicant will provide clinical care to meet demand for our growing Breast Service Line. The candidate will also need novel data science experience and expertise to collaborate with the Institute for Data Science in Oncology.
- Quality - will provide clinical care to breast cancer patients and expand the department’s ability to meet new patient demand.
- Safety - will provide clinical care to breast cancer patients in the outpatient and inpatient setting. Candidate will expand the department’s ability to meet new patient demand in a more timely fashion.
- Access & Lag Time – Candidate will provide clinical care to breast cancer patients and expand the department’s ability to meet the new patient demand. They will also work with multidisciplinary colleagues in the Breast Center multi-team clinic where patients meet their care team on the same day to include medical oncology, radiation oncology and surgical oncology.
- Downstream Revenue - Recruit will have clinical responsibility that will result in downstream revenue.
- Institutional Strategic Plan – Candidate will add novel capability to the Institute for Data Science in Oncology and to the Division of Surgery. Recruit will have experience and training in data science and biostatistics and the ability to develop a data science research program in our department.
Applicants must have a doctorate-level degree appropriate to the department’s mission, licensed to practice in the state of Texas, and board certified (or obtain board certification within the departmental timeline). Appropriate post medical doctoral training required per discipline.
The salary range for this position is $364,905 to $433,481
